Robel Teklemariam (Ethiopia) Cross Country Ski

This Journey has come to a close. The next one has just begun.VComments(6)

The Olympic experience has come to an end and it has been one of many great memories for me. A lot of it has been because of this blog site. I would like to thank everyone that supported me on my journey. You have helped me in some of the most hardest times, because I knew there were people out there that supported my cause. My race did not go as well as I wished but it was an experience like none other.

You will see bellow some of the photos from my Games experience. My heart goes out to all of you and one last time thanks for it all.

At Last in VancouverVComments(25)

The last week has been so hectic that I have not even have had the chance to breath. It all started when my paper work for Canada got delayed. I was not even sure that I would make it to the Opening Ceremony. Some how it all worked out. My journey here from Ethiopia was another Adventure. It started in Addis Ababa where I flew to Dubai. We had to spend the night there before our next flight. What should have taken 20min in Dubai to go through customs took well over 2 hours so we did not get the chance to get to sleep until 2am. The next morning at 6am we got on our way to the Airport. Then it was to Toronto on a 14 hour plus flight and then another 4 plus hour flight to Vancouver.

We arrived here late in the evening. What waited for us at the airport shocked us. There was a bunch of Ethiopians with flags chanting Ethiopia and Robel at the airport baggage claim. It really warmed my heart to see the Ethiopian kids there as well as their parents. I have never in my life experienced anything like it.

The next day we worked on getting all our accreditation done so I did not get the chance to ski. I did manage to run in to someone though. If you notice in this picture it is Tugba from Turkey one of our own from the 5 dreams blog site. It was a great pleasure to meet her.

Any how opening was last night and was an unbelievable experience. It was the culmination of a lot of work by many people to get me here. My race is in a few days and now I will have no distractions all the way to my race. Wish me luck.

Roller Skiing and Getting set for VancouverVComments(33)

So I have come back to Ethiopia now to get all my paper work done to go to Vancouver Canada. I have had to roller ski to keep up my training. I have searched a lot and found a few places where I can get a good work out. It is very weird that I am roller skiing in January but like I said before, you have to do what you got to do. In this photo is a Radio DJ from Kenya that works here in Addis Abeba for a new all English Radio station. She was curious about African skiing since she knew that there has been a Kenyan skier for the past few Olympics. So she came up to where I was training to see what we do in africa to keep in touch with the sport.

GenevaVComments(15)

This ended up being a great day. I went to ski on top of an alpine ski area just out side of Geneva in France. There was no tracks at the cross country trails so this was the only option for cross country skiing.

It was really foggy in Geneva so I was wondering what the weather would be like on the mountain. I had been in Geneva once before and it was cloudy as well. I had no idea what it looked liked on a clear day.

The thing was though, once you got above the clouds, it was all the reasons why I love skiing so much. The skiing was not bad either. I only wish I had my telemark skies as well.

Sorry no post for a while. I have had a hard time with finding internet in the small town that I have been in. Any how this is me after my last race at the Swiss National Championships in Marbach, Switzerlan.

Solo search for snow and races VComments(9)

So for about a week and a half I was traveling and racing with guys from the Brazil team. They had a car so it was nice for a change. Well now I am solo again and having to do things the way I started by train. It is a bit tough to travel with all your gear. The whole reason for this is that my USA Drivers License has expired and I can not get an international one form Ethiopia. So it is all about the train.

You will see on the second video that there is no snow outside. It has been my biggest frustration so far this winter. I just want to qualify but to do that I need to race. So it seems this has been a search for races as much as points to qualify for me. I lost out on five races because of snow conditions. Now time is running short.

The good thing is though my races have been getting better every time.

Lot of Travel no SnowVComments(7)

So I went to Serbia to do several races. It took a lot of effort and time to get there so I could race. The only problem is that it warmed up so much on the night before the races started that they all got canceled. But here are a couple of videos from my trip there. Not racing was very frustrating but it was none the less a good experience to go there.

Cold Spell in EuropeVComments(13)

It has been very cold now for a week. It has made it interesting for racing and skiing all together. Here is a video of what happens to your facial hair when it is cold.

Livingo to St. UlrichVComments(3)

So I had an interesting and fun trip getting to my race this weekend in St. Ulrich Austria. I had been training in Livigno, Italy with my Brazilian friends on the Brazilian ski team. We planed to travel together to Austria. I think we had a bit more stuff then we thought. Here is the video. By the way there are 27 pair of cross country skies on that roof.

Training in St. Moritz SwissVComments(10)

Some days are just too good. This was one of those days this past week, as I was training and getting ready for my race in Alta Badia, Italy.

I had to stop by on my way to Italy in St. Moritz, Swiss while I was waiting for my ride to Italy. So I got the chance to ski there a couple of days. This day was just too good. I skied from St. Moritz to Pontresina then up the valley towards Italy and back. I live for these days.
